Dancing Void (Dejojošais tukšums), dir. Madara Dišlere, 90’, Latvia
Doctor Clown doesn't come to entertain. He comes to awaken emotions, to give the ability and strength that a person undergoing a painful experience needs most. The film embarks on an emotional journey alongside one of the 26 future Dr. clowns. Throughout the story, the Young Clown learns the profession of a clown and gives up himself in the name of becoming a void in which the nature of a clown can freely manifest itself. Will the Young Clown be able to provide a means for someone to release their built-up stress and tension? When he encounters sick children, desperate parents, and exhausted medical staff for the first time, what might his initial reactions be? When the Young Clown arrives in Ukraine, will he be able to connect with those who have suffered from the atrocities of war? Can he demonstrate that he is deeply moved by their experiences, yet still remain resilient enough to open the space for emotions and inner freedom?
The young clown is not alone on this path. Alongside him is his teacher Igor - the clown who has done this path of initiation before, and is the “void” from the moment we get to know him. Has 35-year-old Igor, who has been a Dr. Clown for more than 10 years, lost his ability to feel emotions? Does Igor choose to hide behind the mask of a clown outside his work as well?
