This is the tenth time that Latvia has submitted a film to compete for the US Academy Awards, Oscar, nomination in the category Best Foreign Language Film. On September 4, the expert committee appointed by the National Film Centre came to a unanimous decision, voting for The Chronicles of Melanie, a film by Viestur Kairish, produced at the studio Mistrus Media.
In line with the Special Rules for the Foreign Language Film Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, a feature length motion picture submitted must be first released in the country submitting it no earlier than October 1, 2016, and no later than September 30, 2017, be first publicly exhibited for at least one week in a commercial motion picture theatre and have a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
