LATVIA: FROM TRADITION TO CONTEMPORARY TALENT*
A presence in the market for the last five years, Latvia comes to Cannes with an increase in its production slate and cash rebates. As part of the country’s Centennial anniversary in 2018, the National Film Centre of Latvia commissioned a €7.5 million slate of sixteen feature-length films (fiction, docs, animation) that will go into production this year and will be ready to premiere in 2018.
In addition, the total cash rebate of National Film Center of Latvia and the Riga Film Fund which can be used in tandem in 2017 is increased to € 2,3 million. One of the projects recently selected for a cash rebate is A GENTLE CREATURE by Sergey Loznitsa, who returns to Latvia after shooting IN THE FOG (Cannes Competition 2012) there. A GENTLE CREATURE is produced by Marianne Slot (France) with Film Angels Studio handling the Latvian production.
Lately Latvia has been especially successful internationally with award-winning feature films such as Renars Vimba’s MELLOW MUD (Berlin Crystal Bear for Best Youth Film), but traditionally the country has been known for its high quality animation and documentaries.
Latvian film producer Roberts Vinovskis is going to participate at the PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE.

*This year’s look for the Latvian pavilion is inspired
by the country’s traditional ‘Lielvarde’ belt
that depicts century-old symbols and legends.
The idea behind the belt is that it combines traditions
and high quality to contemporary innovations with people –
both international filmmakers shooting in Latvia
and local talent.
