On Thursday, January 23, the nominees for the Academy Awards "Oscars" were announced, and animation film "Flow" by Gints Zilbalodis is nominated in two categories – “Best Animated Feature Film" and “Best International Feature Film” – becoming the first Latvian film to ever earn an “Oscars” nomination.
Latvia's official application for the U.S. Academy Award in the category "International feature film" was submitted for the 16th time, regularly Latvian films has been proposed since 2010. This year, films from 85 countries were submitted for the "Best International Feature Film" category, 15 films were selected for the short list in December.
In the category “Best Animated Feature Film”, the previously short list was not selected, while in the prediction listsm intensively compiled in various global and especially U.S. media, Flow appeared more and more often. A positive result was also promised by the rapidly growing number of international awards and nominations – the British Academy BAFTA Awards nominations a week ago, the Hollywood Accredited Journalists Award Golden Globe" in early January, the European Film Academy Awards in December and other awards and nominations on different continents.
In the category "Best Animated Feature Film" the competitors of the Latvian film Flow are Hollywood's big-budget projects Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot, the Australian film Memoir of a Snail and the British legendary studio Aardman Animations film Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Film is financially supported by the National Film Centre of Latvia, the State Culture Capital Foundation, Eurimages, the French National Film Centre, television Arte and Canal+, as well as various regional funds and support programmes in France and Belgium. The film was created as a co-production of three countries - Dream Well Studio (Latvia), Sacrebleu Productions (France) and Take Five (Belgium).
