Latvian Cash Rebates in Action

A case study of cash rebates from the National Film Centre of Latvia and Riga Film Fund with the participation of lead producers Marianne Slot and Carine Leblanc (Slot Machine, FR), Latvian producer Jānis Kalējs (Film Angels Studio, LV), and director of the National Film Centre of Latvia Dita Rietuma will be moderated by Variety‘s Senior International Correspondent Leo Barraclough on Tuesday, May 23 at 16:30, Cannes Village International Pantiero, Latvian Pavilion #221.

While Latvia is gearing up to celebrate its Centennial in 2018 with a slate of 16 feature-length films, its international profile is at an all-time peak thanks to competition films A GENTLE CREATURE, shot with Latvia’s two cash rebates, Zvyagintsev’s LOVELESS starring Latvian actor Andris Keišs and György Kristóf’s OUT (Un Certain Regard), funded by the National Film Centre of Latvia’s cash rebate.

After Sergei Loznitsa had shot part of his previous film IN THE FOG (Cannes Competition 2012) in Latvia, he returned to shoot this year’s Cannes Competition film A GENTLE CREATURE – inspired by Dostoyevsky’s short story – in the Latvian city of Daugavpils. His lead producers Marianne Slot and Carine Leblanc worked with producer Janis Kalejs, supported by two cash rebates. The National Film Centre of Latvia rebates offers up to 25% in cash rebates and the Riga Film Fund up to 20% – depending on whether the storyline is set in Latvia or Latvian services are being used. This case study will look more closely at the international collaboration between the lead producers and the various parties involved in the Latvian side of the production.

In addition to the successful cash rebates and a strong, increased slate, Latvian cinema will be part of this year’s Locarno’s First Look section that will present five to seven Baltic films in post-production stage  for an audience of professionals attending the Industry Days. “The First Look section represents a great opportunity for the Latvian film industry to highlight its production boost – 16 new features – for Latvia’s centenary program”, says National Film Centre of Latvia director Dita Rietuma.
